How to narrow a five-letter word list

Start with the most certain clue. A fixed beginning or ending usually removes more possibilities than a letter sequence that could appear anywhere. Add one constraint at a time so you can see which clue reduces the candidate list.

Letter position matters here too: S, E, A, R, and O are the most common letters anywhere in this list, but they cluster differently by position. S opens or closes far more words than it appears in the middle. A Starts with or Ends with filter on one of those letters usually returns a longer list than a middle-position guess, so pair it with a second, rarer constraint to keep the results useful.
