31 different O-words have been the daily answer in the 1,940 puzzles from #0 (June 19, 2021) through #1939 (October 10, 2026). The first was OUTDO on puzzle #39 and the most recent was OLDEN on puzzle #1891 (August 23, 2026). Why do so few Wordle answers start with O?
O is not a rare letter. It appears in 30% of all Wordle answers, but almost always in the middle of the word. Counting every distinct answer, O sits in position one 31 times, position two 241 times, position three 215 times, position four 102 times, and position five 51times. The first slot is O's least likely spot, which is why a yellow O is far more common than a green one up front.
How often does an O-word come up?
On average an O-starting answer appears every 62 puzzles, roughly once every two months, and the longest gap between two of them was 229 puzzles. By calendar year the count has run 3 in 2021, 4 in 2022, 5 in 2023, 8 in 2024, 6 in 2025, 5 in 2026 (2021 is a partial year starting in June, and the latest year is still in progress). Most of them share a shape. 17 end in S (OATHS, OMENS, OVENS) and 8 end in -ED (OILED, OPTED, OWNED), so 25 of 33 are plurals or past-tense forms. Among the 31 O-answers there is no -ED verb, and the only word ending in S is OASIS, which is not a plural. What is the best 5-letter O word to guess in Wordle?
OPERA is the strongest O-word guess based on the letters Wordle answers actually use. Scoring each past O-answer by how many distinct answers contain its letters puts OPERA first, followed by OUTER, OCEAN, OTHER, OLDER, and ONSET. They pair the O with E, R, T, and A, the letters that show up in the most answers, so they test a lot of the board while locking in the first letter.
Do not open with an O-word on purpose. Because O so rarely comes first, a word that starts with O spends a slot testing the one position O almost never fills. Watch for a repeated letter
12 of the 31 O-answers repeat a letter, which is 39% against 31% of all answers. Many are adjacent doubles (OCCUR, ODDLY, OFFAL, OFFER, OTTER, OOMPH), and some repeat the O itself (ONION, OZONE, OUTDO). In the curated list, 17 of 59 O-words repeat a letter.
