How many 4-letter words are there?

There is no single number, because every dictionary draws the line in a different place. This list holds 1,855 common four-letter words taken from the everyday-vocabulary word bank WordleSolver uses across the site. The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (Sixth Edition) accepts about 3,996 four-letter words, and combined Scrabble and Words With Friends lists reach roughly 5,880.

The gap is mostly rare, archaic and technical forms such as AAHS, which game dictionaries accept but few people ever write. For reading, teaching or a casual puzzle, the shorter list is faster to scan. To check whether a play is legal in Scrabble, use that game's official dictionary instead.

Letter patterns

Which letters do 4-letter words start and end with?

S starts more four-letter words than any other letter (194), and S also ends the most (388). The reason is plurals: 359 words in this list are a three-letter word plus S, such as CATS and DOGS. Only 184 words start with a vowel, while the second position is where vowels crowd in.

This is not the official New York Times answer list. NYT Wordle uses five-letter words, and four-letter spin-offs each keep their own dictionaries, so treat this page as a brainstorming list rather than a source of answers.

Watch for repeated letters: 341 of the 1,855 words repeat a letter, and 204 have a double side by side, such as BOOK or JAZZ. A three-vowel guess such as AREA, IDEA or AUTO tests vowels quickly; after that, common consonants like S, T, L and R usually narrow the field fastest.

What does “four-letter word” mean?

In everyday speech, “four-letter word” is a polite way to say “swear word”. The phrase has been recorded in the US and UK since at least 1886 and comes from the fact that many vulgar English words happen to be four letters long, although it now covers rude words of any length. People also use it as a joke about ordinary words, calling WORK or GOLF a four-letter word.
