Six-, seven- and eight-letter words are the mid-length words behind Scrabble bingos, crosswords and longer Wordle-style puzzles. WordleSolver's word bank holds 5,222 six-letter, 6,612 seven-letter and 6,357 eight-letter words, while the full NASPA Scrabble list holds 25,473 seven-letter and 31,736 eight-letter words.
How Many 6, 7 and 8 Letter Words Are There?
The answer depends on which dictionary you count. Every word list is a choice about which words to include, so two sites can report very different totals for the same word length, and both can be correct.
How Many Words Are in WordleSolver's Word Bank?
WordleSolver's word bank holds 5,222 six-letter words, 6,612 seven-letter words and 6,357 eight-letter words. For comparison, the same bank holds 3,424 five-letter words, so each step up from five to seven letters adds roughly 1,400 to 1,800 words, and the count dips slightly at eight. Those figures come from the live data behind the site's word finder, so a list you filter there matches the counts in this guide.
Why Are Official Scrabble Lists So Much Bigger?
The NASPA Word List is the official word authority for tournament Scrabble in the United States and Canada. Its current edition, NWL2023 (effective February 29, 2024), holds 196,601 words in total, including 25,473 seven-letter words and 31,736 eight-letter words. Collins Scrabble Words is the British and international counterpart. A Scrabble list includes plurals, verb forms, technical terms and rare loanwords that a word-puzzle bank leaves out. WordleSolver's 6,612 seven-letter words are therefore about 26% of the NASPA total, and its 6,357 eight-letter words are about 20%.
How Do 6, 7 and 8 Letter Words Differ From Each Other?
Longer words get more vowels, fewer unique letters and more suffixes. Across WordleSolver's word bank, the average six-letter word has 2.14 vowels, the seven-letter word has 2.50 and the eight-letter word has 2.88, while the share of words with no repeated letter falls from 48.8% to 33.7% to 20.7%.
Which Word Length Has the Most Repeated Letters?
Seven- and eight-letter words repeat letters far more often than short words do. About 1 in 4 seven-letter words (24.1%) and 23.4% of eight-letter words contain a double letter, compared with 18.5% of six-letter words and 13.3% of five-letter words. The table below puts the four lengths side by side, with five letters included because that is the length Wordle itself uses.

What Does the Table Tell You About Guessing?
Letter choice shifts as words get longer, even though S stays the most common first letter at every length. At six letters, E appears in two of every three words (67.4%), and -ED endings are the main suffix. At seven and eight letters, the -ING ending takes over, covering 14.4% and 17.6% of words. Plan your suffix guesses around the length you are solving, not around a five-letter habit. For the five-letter version of these numbers, see the letter frequency guide.
What Are Some Common 6 Letter Words?
Common six-letter words are everyday words such as ACCEPT, BRIDGE, COFFEE, FRIEND, GARDEN, MARKET, PLANET and SIMPLE, all of which sit in WordleSolver's six-letter list. Six letters is the shortest length where suffixes dominate the shape of a word.
Which Endings and Openers Are Most Common at Six Letters?
Three endings do most of the work: S ends 27.4% of six-letter words, D ends 19.1% and E ends 10.7%. The two-letter ending -ED alone covers 894 words (17.1%), followed by -ER (435 words) and -ES (430 words). For openers, S leads at 13.3%, then C (8.4%) and B (7.3%), and the pair RE opens 145 words, the most common two-letter start. If you know a word ends in -ED, you have already fixed two of six positions, which removes about 83% of the list in one step.
Which Six Letter Words Test the Most Letters at Once?
RAISED, SATIRE and ARISEN are the highest-coverage six-letter words in the bank, scored by how many common letters each one tests without repeating a letter. Each uses A, E, I, R and S, which are among the most frequent letters in the list. Use one as a probing guess when you want to learn letters rather than win immediately. Only four six-letter words in the bank have no standard vowel (A, E, I, O or U), and RHYTHM is the best known of them.
What Are Some Common 7 Letter Words?
Common seven-letter words include BALANCE, CHICKEN, FREEDOM, HOLIDAY, JOURNEY, KITCHEN, MORNING and PICTURE, all present in the bank. Seven letters is where words start to feel like full vocabulary rather than short building blocks.
Why Is -ING So Common at Seven Letters?
A seven-letter word is often a four-letter verb with -ING attached. In the bank, 953 of 6,612 seven-letter words (14.4%) end in -ING, compared with 259 six-letter words (5.0%). Add -ED (1,059 words) and -ES (698 words), and three suffixes alone account for roughly 41% of every seven-letter word. Guess the suffix first, then fill the four-letter root.
Which Seven Letter Words Are Best for Elimination?
NASTIER, RETAINS and RETINAS test the most high-frequency letters at seven letters without repeating any. They rely on the same core set of A, E, I, N, R, S and T. In Scrabble, RETAINS is famous for a different reason: it has ten anagrams, which makes it a favorite for players who build seven-tile plays. Seven-letter words that use only common tiles are the ones players most often learn.
What Are Some Common 8 Letter Words?
Common eight-letter words include ABSOLUTE, ACADEMIC, ACCIDENT, BIRTHDAY, COMPUTER, DAUGHTER, DIVISION and MOUNTAIN. Eight letters is the longest length WordleSolver's finder supports, and it has the lowest share of words with no repeated letter (20.7%).
How Does -ING Shape Eight Letter Words?
More than 1 in 6 eight-letter words ends in -ING: 1,121 of 6,357, or 17.6%. Together with -ED (906 words) and -ES (674 words), these three endings cover about 42% of the list. The most common first-two-letter pair at this length is RE, which opens 264 words (4.2%), more than at any shorter length. A start of RE plus an ending of -ING, as in REACHING, REDUCING or REFUSING, is a safe pattern to try when you have few other clues.
Which Eight Letter Words Use the Most Common Letters?
ENTRAILS, LATRINES and STRAINED have the best letter coverage among eight-letter words with no repeated letter. Only 1,313 of the 6,357 eight-letter words (20.7%) have eight different letters, so these words are rare enough that finding one feels like a find. They are better as study words for Scrabble than as realistic puzzle answers.
How Do You Find 6, 7 and 8 Letter Words From the Letters You Have?
You find them by entering the letters you hold and letting a filter remove everything that cannot be built from them. A word finder starts with the full word bank, keeps only words you can spell from your letters, and then narrows the result with an optional start, middle or ending.
How to Narrow a Word List Step by Step
- Type the letters you hold (your Scrabble rack, or the letters of a scrambled puzzle) into the WordleSolver word finder.
- Choose 6, 7 or 8 in the word length menu.
- Add a start, a middle or an ending if you know one. "Ends with" accepts up to four letters, so ING or ED removes most of the list immediately.
- Sort the results by length for the longest plays, by Scrabble score for a game, or alphabetically for a puzzle.
- Pick a candidate, check it against any clues you already have, and repeat with a different filter if it fails.
What Does a Worked Example Look Like?
The same narrowing power shows up in the word bank itself. Start with all 6,612 seven-letter words. Keep only words ending in -ING and you have 953. Require an S at the start and 115 remain. Rule out E and 95 remain. Require an A and the list drops to 39: SHARING, STATING, STAYING, SPACING, SKATING, SOARING and 33 others. Four filters took the list from 6,612 to 39, a 99.4% cut. If the second letter is also T, only 7 words are left: STATING, STAYING, STARING, STAGING, STAKING, STALING and STAVING.
Which Word Lengths Matter Most in Scrabble Bingos?
Seven- and eight-letter words matter most because they earn the 50-point bonus. A bingo is a play that uses all seven tiles on your rack in one turn, and it adds 50 points to the word's normal score. An eight-letter word qualifies too, because you play your seven tiles through one letter already on the board.
Which Letters Build the Best Seven Letter Plays?
The best seven-letter plays use common tiles, namely L, N, R, S and T together with the vowels A, E, I, O and U. The Collins Scrabble blog points out that learning obscure sevens such as ZYZZYVA is less useful than learning high-probability ones such as NATURES, NEUTRAL, TAILORS and RITUALS. The letter set AEINRST forms nine different words and is among the most productive sets in tournament play.
Which Rare Letters Are Worth Knowing?
Rare letters score high but appear in few words. In WordleSolver's bank, Q appears in 60 six-letter, 95 seven-letter and 108 eight-letter words. Z appears in 87, 97 and 59 words, and X in 95, 110 and 122 words. Eight-letter Q words such as QUESTION, QUANTITY and QUICKEST are a good place to start. Rare-letter plays can be huge: the highest-scoring bingo on record, CAZIQUES, scored 392 points at a 1982 tournament in Manchester.
Can You Play Wordle With 6, 7 or 8 Letter Words?
Not on the original game. Wordle, created by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle and bought by The New York Times Company on January 31, 2022, uses five-letter answers and six tries, with a curated list of 2,309 answers. Longer lengths come from spin-off games, such as Lingle and hello wordl, which let you choose a longer target word.
Which WordleSolver Tools Handle Longer Words?
If a spin-off game uses six or seven letters, the 6-letter Wordle solver and the 7-letter Wordle solver filter the list from your green, yellow and gray tiles. For eight letters, the main word finder works with a length filter. If you came for classic Wordle instead, the five-letter words guide and the best Wordle starting words cover the five-letter game in depth.
