The five-letter words that help in Wordle are the ones built from common letters, E, A, R, O, T, S, L, N, and I, with few or no repeats. Wordle accepts about 13,000 five-letter words as guesses, but it draws the daily answer from a smaller pool of roughly 2,300 everyday words.
Search “5 letter words for Wordle” and most results hand you a giant alphabetical list or a Scrabble word finder. Neither tells you which words are worth typing into the grid. This guide sorts five-letter words by the job they do: probing the answer, and matching it.
What makes a five-letter word useful for Wordle
A word earns its place in Wordle by what it rules out, not by what it scores. Every guess is feedback, so the best words test letters that are likely to appear and likely to matter for position.
Common letters beat high-scoring letters
Scrabble rewards J, Q, X, and Z. Wordle does the opposite: those letters appear in very few answers, so a guess full of them tells you almost nothing. The letters that carry information are the frequent ones, E, A, R, O, T, S, L, N, and I. A first guess made of five of those, like STARE or SLATE, checks a large slice of the answer space in one move. Save Q and Z for when a clue actually points at them.
The guess list and the answer list are not the same
Wordle keeps two lists. The accepted-guess list is large, around 13,000 five-letter words, and includes obscure entries like ROATE and SOARE that you will never see as a solution. The answer list is much smaller, roughly 2,300 curated everyday words, and the New York Times edits it by hand. It leaves out most plurals ending in S, technical vocabulary, and anything offensive. So every answer is a valid guess, but most valid guesses are not answers. Openers like ROATE are legal and useful precisely because they can never waste a turn by being right too early.
A word on openers
A good opening word is a fixed choice you can reuse: two or three vowels, three or four common consonants, no repeats. CRANE, SLATE, STARE, TRACE, and LEAST all fit. If you would rather clear the vowels in one move, ADIEU or AUDIO pack three or four into five letters, but that is a niche play: in the WordleSolver list of 3,424 common five-letter words, 1,946 have exactly two vowels and only 219 have three, so a two-vowel opener that also tests consonants is the workhorse. Five-letter words to expect as answers
Knowing what the answer will not be is half the game.
Everyday vocabulary, not obscure words
Because the answer list is curated, solutions are words a general audience knows: TABLE, CHAIR, GHOST, PLANT, RIVER. If you are staring at a candidate like XYLYL, it is almost certainly a legal guess rather than the answer. When two words fit and one is common while the other is rare, guess the common one.
Repeated letters and tricky patterns
About 32% of common five-letter words repeat a letter, so ABBEY, PRESS, LEVEL, and MAMMA-style shapes are well within range. Players lose streaks by assuming five different letters.
