Quick answer

Wordle in 1 is an official New York Times bonus puzzle that launched on September 2, 2026. Each game has five rounds. Every round shows one clue word already coloured green, yellow and grey, and exactly one word fits it. Solve all five rounds to win.

What is Wordle in 1?

Wordle in 1 is a variation of Wordle made by New York Times Games, where the clue comes first and the guessing comes second. NYT's announcement describes it as a game where players are given one clue and there is only one possible word solution. The clue is a five-letter word that has already been scored with Wordle's usual colours, so your whole job is to work out which word produced that pattern.

The puzzle is one of six bonus puzzle types that NYT Games introduced on September 2, 2026. Jonathan Knight, the head of Games, said the bonus puzzles are “designed for flexible, low-pressure play,” with no daily obligation. That makes Wordle in 1 a weekly side game, not a replacement for the daily puzzle covered in our how to play Wordle guide.

How do you play Wordle in 1?

You play Wordle in 1 by reading one coloured clue word and typing the single word that matches it, five times in a row. The colours mean exactly what they mean in the daily game, which our Wordle colours guide explains in full.

  1. Read the clue word. Each round opens with one five-letter word whose tiles are already coloured.
  2. Lock the greens. A green letter is in the answer and in that exact position.
  3. Move the yellows. A yellow letter is in the answer, but not in the position shown.
  4. Drop the greys. A grey letter is not in the answer, unless another copy of the same letter is green or yellow.
  5. Type the one word that fits. Only one word satisfies every tile in the clue.
  6. Repeat for five rounds. NYT says players need to guess all five words to win the game.

How many guesses do you get per round?

The target is one guess per round, but the official rules do not spell out a limit. NYT's announcement says there is “one word to be guessed for each round” and stops there. Published write-ups disagree on what happens after a miss: Beebom's guide from September 3, 2026 says the variation gives you just one attempt, while TheWordFinder's Wordle in 1 page describes unlimited guesses. We could not confirm either version in the game itself, so we are reporting both.

The practical advice is the same either way. Do the full deduction before you type, because the puzzle is built so that a careful solver never needs a second try.

What is timer mode?

Timer mode is an optional setting that records how long you take. NYT presents it as an extra challenge that lets players compare their times with friends. Leave it off while you learn the format, since the skill being tested is accuracy and not typing speed.

How is Wordle in 1 different from regular Wordle?

Wordle in 1 turns the daily game inside out: regular Wordle asks you to gather clues, and Wordle in 1 hands you a finished clue and asks you to read it perfectly. The table sets the two side by side, using NYT's published description for the Wordle in 1 column.

The skill gap is real. In the daily game a loose second guess costs you nothing, because you still have four more rows. In Wordle in 1 there is no second clue coming, so a misread yellow or a forgotten duplicate-letter rule is the whole difference between a solved round and a missed one.

How can one coloured word leave only one possible answer?

One coloured word can leave a single answer when its greens, yellows and greys overlap tightly enough to rule out every other word. This does not happen often by chance, which is why each Wordle in 1 clue has to be chosen deliberately. Here is a worked example we built from our own archive of past Wordle answers. It is our illustration of the logic, not a real NYT round.

CRANE

C is green in position one. N and E are yellow, so both are in the answer but not in positions four and five. R and A are grey.

Work through it in order. The answer starts with C. It contains N somewhere other than fourth place and E somewhere other than fifth place. It has no R and no A. Checked against the 1,909 different words that have been Wordle answers up to puzzle #1933 on October 4, 2026, exactly one word survives: COVEN.

There is a catch, and it explains why the puzzle needs human editors. Widen the pool from past answers to the full English dictionary and other words fit the same tiles, including CONEY and CENTS. A clue is only a fair Wordle in 1 round if the answer is unique in the word list the game checks against, so the constructors have to pick both the clue word and the answer with care.

How often does an ordinary opening word pin down one answer?

Rarely: a popular opening word identifies a single past answer less than 2% of the time. We scored six common openers against all 1,909 past answers and counted how many answers produce a colour pattern that no other answer shares.

Clue wordDifferent colour patternsAnswers pinned to one wordShare of 1,909 answersBiggest leftover group
TRACE146341.8%183 (all grey)
CRANE139301.6%194 (all grey)
SLATE142301.6%177 (all grey)
RAISE124251.3%143 (all grey)
AUDIO87241.3%354 (yellow A only)
ADIEU76140.7%220 (yellow A only)

TRACE does best, and it still isolates only 34 of 1,909 answers. With CRANE, an all-grey result leaves 194 past answers standing. That is the gap Wordle in 1 closes by design: every round is one of the rare clue and answer pairs where the colours alone finish the job. When do new Wordle in 1 puzzles come out?

New bonus puzzles come out every Wednesday. NYT describes the feature as a weekly drop of five to six new puzzles, and the first drop arrived with the launch on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The next one after this article was published is Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Wordle in 1 is not promised in every drop. NYT says the types of bonus puzzles available may vary from week to week, and it lists Wordle in 1 among the types a drop can include. Subscribers do not have to play on the day, either. NYT says they can play the latest drop, catch up on previous weeks, or jump in whenever they have time.

Is Wordle in 1 free, and where do you play it?

Wordle in 1 is free to try and a subscriber feature after that. NYT launched bonus puzzles with a starter set, a group of introductory puzzles that all solvers can play without a subscription. The ongoing weekly drops are for NYT Games and All Access subscribers.

Access is also being switched on in stages. NYT said on September 2, 2026 that bonus puzzles were starting to roll out and would be available to all Games and All Access subscribers “in the next few months.” If you subscribe and cannot see them yet, the rollout has most likely not reached your account.

Where is Wordle in 1 in the NYT Games app and site?

Wordle in 1 lives in the Bonus Puzzles area of New York Times Games. NYT lists four places to play: the Games app on iOS, the Games app on Android, mobile web and desktop. On the web, the Games footer has a Bonus Puzzles link that opens the hub at nytimes.com/games/bonus/hub, which was live when we checked on October 6, 2026.

Does Wordle in 1 count toward your Wordle stats?

Reports say it does not. Beebom's guide states that bonus puzzles do not affect your regular daily game statistics. NYT's announcement is silent on streaks, so your daily numbers, explained in our Wordle stats guide, should be read as separate from anything you do in a bonus puzzle.

Are sites called Wordle in One the same game?

No. Independent sites have already copied the format under names like Wordle in One, and at least one states on its own page that it is not affiliated with The New York Times. They run their own word lists and rules, in the same way the clones in our Wordle Unlimited explainer do.

What other NYT bonus puzzles launched with Wordle in 1?

Five other bonus puzzle types launched alongside Wordle in 1, each a twist on a game NYT already publishes. The descriptions and schedules below come from NYT's announcement.

What is the best way to solve a Wordle in 1 round?

The best way to solve a round is to treat the clue as a checklist and refuse to type until every tile is accounted for. These habits follow directly from the colour rules.

  • Write the skeleton first. Put the green letters in their slots and leave blanks for the others. In the example above that is C _ _ _ _.
  • Place each yellow by elimination. A yellow letter has at most four slots left, and greens usually remove some of those.
  • Use the greys as hard bans. Cross out every candidate that contains a grey letter before you weigh anything else.
  • Watch repeated letters. If the clue shows the same letter once in colour and once in grey, the answer has exactly one copy. Our Wordle double letters guide covers the rule.
  • Prefer the everyday word. When two candidates seem to fit, recheck the tiles. If both still fit, the common word is the safer answer.

You can check your reasoning with our Wordle solver: enter the clue word, set each tile to the colour shown, and read the remaining candidates. Our word list is not the one NYT uses, so the solver may show a few extra words. It is still the fastest way to see which letters and positions you have not yet ruled out.
